This school year we will experience the 10th edition of the OUT OF art project of Athena-syntax on
the GO! Royal Athenaeum Antwerp.
Both Athena-syntax and her OUT OF project took its current form and philosophy after a special
meeting in the middle of the art project of Lawrence Weiner and Liam Gillick at the M KHA (2011): 'A
SYNTAX OF DEPENDANCY:'. Not only our name resulted from it, but also philosophically this brought
us to a synthesis of what had been maturing for years.
The work in the hall to our AthenA room was Lawrence Weiner’s response to the announcement of
our project.
OUT OF SIGHT is the name of the project for this year and is based on a work by Lawrence Weiner.
Lawrence Weiner passed away on December 2, 2021 at the age of 79. This touched us very…
We would like to dedicate this edition not only to the substantive idea behind this work, but also to the person of Lawrence Weiner, his work as an artist and the role he played in (conceptual) art.
OUT OF SIGHT is an interactive installation by Lawrence Weiner (2017) that encourages community connection combined with humor and quirkiness in a game-like format. The viewer’s learning and self-actualization is encouraged through the use of graphic phrases embedded in the work. By ‘hopping’ from one position to another, OUT OF SIGHT takes advantage of the dynamic ‘gamification’ of learning and introspection. The viewer navigates through the work as they see fit, interprets and interacts with the work. OUT OF SIGHT reflects the potential of all of us to connect with ourselves and each other in a process of shared exploration. It reflects the search for who you are and where you want to go to …
“A person coming in with whatever situation they find it, young, old or indifferent, the minutes they have any thoughts about themselves going FROM HERE TO THERE, will be able to stand still and realize they first have to imagine themselves doing it, that’s assuming a position” L. Weiner
