Het Koninklijk Atheneum Antwerpen ligt aan de rand van Antwerpen-Noord, een wijk die, eigen aan elke wereldstad, gekenmerkt wordt door een grote diversiteit aan culturen. Met leerlingen uit 50 verschillende landen weerspiegelt de school deze diversiteit: Albanië, Angola, Armenië,  België, Bolivia, Brazilië, Bulgarije, China,  Dominicaanse Republiek, El Salvador, Eritrea, Filipijnen, Frankrijk, Ghana, Griekenland, Guinea, Guyana, India, Irak, Italië, Ivoorkust, Kaapverdië, Kameroen, Kenia, Kosovo, Libië, Macedonië, Marokko, Mongolië, Nederland, Nepal, Nigeria, Oekraïne, Oostenrijk, Pakistan, Palestina, Polen, Portugal, Roemenië, Rusland, Rwanda, Servië, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Spanje, Suriname, Syrië, Thailand, Turkije & Venezuela. Binnen het Atheneum weerspiegelen zich de grote maatschappelijke vragen van vandaag. De tentoonstellingen die in het Atheneum plaats vinden, hebben tot doel complexe problemen bespreekbaar te maken.

Middels een zorgvuldige selectie van één videowerk per land waar de leerlingen vandaan komen, wordt een subtiel netwerk aangereikt. De selectie van de werken is uitermate delicaat omdat het gericht is op het betrekken van de leerlingen in dit artistieke project, maar evenzeer op het overstijgen van de lokale omgeving. HELD ervaart dit project als een unieke kans om, vertrekkende vanuit een reëel en concreet gegeven, een gegrond globaal en internationaal project te verwezenlijken.        

De titel van de tentoonstelling ‘I travelled the world and the seven seas’, is ontleend aan een tekstregel uit de popsong “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” uit 1983 van de Britse band “Eurythmics” (Annie Lennox en Dave Stewart). De uitdrukking “Sail the Seven Seas” kende verschillende betekenissen, maar evolueerde tot een actuele, figuratieve term waarmee men diegene aanduidt die “al de zeeën en oceanen” van de wereld heeft bevaren. De titel vat het hele tentoonstellingsconcept samen: de internationale keuze van de werken, het traject door verschillende wateren en continenten, het geprojecteerde bewegende beeld als vehikel voor een ontdekkingsreis, met de verwijzing naar de beweging van volkeren en de migratiegeschiedenis.

De tentoonstelling bestaat uit twee onderdelen die elk op een heel specifieke manier hetzelfde videoprogramma vertonen:

Deel 1: de vloerprojecties. Op de vloer van de AthenA Zaal worden zeven “liggende” videobeelden simultaan geprojecteerd. Deze zeven videobeelden verbeelden de zeven zeeën.

Deel 2: de cinematografische setting. Dezelfde 50 video’s worden integraal na elkaar vertoond in een cinematografische setting. Door deze optimale presentatie krijgt elk individueel werk de nodige aandacht. Er wordt een dagprogramma gemaakt met begin- en eind-uur en timing van elke film, zodat de bezoeker het hele progamma kan bekijken maar ook specifiek kan kiezen voor bepaalde films.

‘I travelled the world and the seven seas’ is een initiatief van HELD (Wilfried Huet, Dirk Engelen, Stella Lohaus, Isabel Devriendt). In co-productie met LLS 387 ruimte voor actuele kunst, in samenwerking met Escautville en met de medewerking van Vidisquare. Dit project kwam tot stand met de steun van De Vlaamse Gemeenschap, Stad Antwerpen, CERA.
